Basic requirements for importing animals into the European Union

Let’s analyze importing pets into Germany

If you are planning to transport your dog or cat to Germany, you need to consider the following requirements:

 • Age of the animal: An animal can only be imported into Germany if it has reached the age of 4 months. If your pet is under 4 months old, it cannot be officially imported into Germany. Attempts to circumvent this rule, for example, by changing the age in documents, can lead to serious consequences. Veterinary services carefully check the age and condition of animals. In case of doubt, the animal can be quarantined and the owner will be required to pay the costs of its care.

Microchipping: All dogs and cats entering Germany must be microchipped. It is important that the microchip is inserted before or on the same day of the rabies vaccination.

• Vaccination: The pet’s veterinary passport must contain vaccination records, including rabies vaccination, which must be done no earlier than 12 weeks after birth and no less than 31 days before entering the country.

• Veterinary documents: To enter Germany you will need an international veterinary certificate from your country of departure, as well as an EU Health Certificate. Also remember to treat your pet for internal and external parasites 5 days before departure.

Ways to transport pets to the European Union

Bringing pets into the European Union is permitted by any means, which makes traveling with your four-legged friend convenient and safe. You can choose one of the following options:

• In the aircraft cabin: Your pet will be next to you in a special soft carrier, which allows you to be confident in its comfort and safety.

• As additional luggage: Your pet will travel in comfortable conditions, but outside the cabin. This is a convenient option for large and heavy animals.

• As cargo: Your pet will be in a specially equipped cargo compartment that provides comfort and safety. This is a good option for animals that cannot travel in the cabin.

Don’t forget to bring along a favorite toy or blanket to make your pet feel at home, and enjoy the trip together!
